Hyperpigmentation

Hperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs when skin produces an excess of melanin, resulting in patchy skin or darkened spots. Hyperpigmentation affects people of all skin types, most often showing up in areas of the skin that are subject to sun exposure such as the arms, face, and legs. At Phyto-C Skin Care by Phytoceuticals, Inc., we research, develop, and manufacture safe, natural, and effective skin care products to help reduce the hyperpigmentation while maintaining skin’s integrity, glow, and elasticity.

Understanding Hyperpigmentation

Common symptoms of hyperpigmentation include:

  • Large patches of darkened skin
  • Tan, brown, or black spots that appear with over exposure to the sun
  • Black or light brown lesions
  • Age spots mostly on the face and hands
  • Flat areas of discoloration left behind after skin heals from an injury or trauma

Sun exposure is the leading cause of hyperpigmentation since sunlight triggers the production of melanin. Melanin acts as a natural sunscreen to protect against harmful UV, but its overproduction can cause skin discoloration.

Hormonal influences are a major cause of melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation that is common among pregnant women. Estrogen and progesterone enhance the overproduction of melanin especially when skin is exposed to the sun.

Hyperpigmentation can also be caused by age, skin injuries and inflammation, disease, and certain medication such as antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs. Using topical skin care products that include ingredients such as Kojic Acid and Vitamin C may help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Popular Products for Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be corrected by using products that not only help the skin’s complexion but also improve the look of dark spots and discoloration. Using serums infused with antioxidants and Vitamin C and E significantly improve uneven skin tone as well as tighten the skin.

Common Hyperpigmentation FAQs

  • Which foods can help remove hyperpigmentation?

Certain foods may help with inflammation and therefore lessen the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Some of these superfoods include potatoes, yogurt, and papaya.

  • How long does it take for hyperpigmentation to fade?

The amount of time it takes for skin to return to its natural color after hyperpigmentation treatment depends on how dark the spots were and the treatment. Most patients see improvement from hyperpigmentation in between three and 24 months.

  • Does tanning help with hyperpigmentation?

Tanning does not help with hyperpigmentation as it exposes skin to UV rays that accelerate the process, especially in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
